Relive the experience with us as we take you to MELILAS! |
Thankful for this important collaboration with Project Women, BUGTAW had the opportunity to share 50 books and puzzles with participants from the indigenous Iban & Penan communities.
Visiting the Melilas Longhouse (an Iban longhouse) as well as meeting the participants coming from the Penan Longhouse in Kampong Sukang was a truly humbling experience for BUGTAW.

Mukim Melilas is located in the deepest part of Ulu Belait, Brunei. It is a 2+ hours drive over rough road from our meeting point in Kampong Lamunin, Tutong. The modern Melilas Longhouse is not only the longest with 15 units but also the most remote in the country. Off the beaten track and without mobile phone coverage, this community is definitely important, significant and worth a visit. Meeting the residents was indeed a special privilege. Being able to put faces behind the intricately hand-woven baskets made with love by the local women using timeless traditions that we often see in BSB made it more worthwhile. BUGTAW’s main objective is to create meaning by sharing carefully chosen books to promote reading for fun as an enriching alternative to gadgets. |
